Hospital Care

So when I used to go to the hospital to get my IV treatments I always had to be on top of my care because of careless and inattentive staff. I would tell the nurses what to do. I had to tell a nurse once that I was no longer on a medication as they were about to give it to me in my IV. I had nurses wanting to take blood from my port when the Doctor recommended them not to. I would have to call the nurse or respiratory sraff because I wasn't getting my nebulizer medications. I had to buzz the nurses to get my meds before I ate. I can't imagine if I was not in my right mind or not able to advocate for myself as to what would happen to me. When I'm in the hospital with all the stress and worry that comes with it I expect to be taken care of and be able to relax a bit because they are on top of my care. They should be telling me what to do, not me telling them and these are supposed to be good hospitals.
Has anyone experienced this before?

  1. Thank you for your question! This is too often a common occurrence. It seems like managed care means we get to manage our own care! I agree with you that if you are too ill to be on your toes about everything thing, your care could really suffer. One of our health leaders wrote an artilce about her experience and how she focused on improving her communications with her medical team. For others, their relationships with their doctors have led to medical gaslighting. Self-advocacy is so important. All the best, Kathy (Team member)
