AsIs anyone else a carrier with asthma.
I am a c f carrier and just realized we can have cystic fibrosis like diseases. Any one have insight on that?
Thank you for your question. Most CF carriers don't have symptoms, but some, like you, do. This is because the CFTR gene can be mutated in 1,700 different ways. Different mutations can affect each organ system in unique ways. What symptoms do you have? All teh best, Kathy (Team member) Have had asthma since childhood. It is causing more flares than in past. Used to only occur when have a cold or covid or bronchitis. Needing prednisone more frequently. Looking back I had an episode of pancreatitis about 20 yrs ago and dr found no reason for it and it was milder than most people have. Dr thought all this might be related to carrier status. She ran a sweat chloride test and it was intermediate at 46 and 49.

I think the distinction between being a CF carrier and having a CFTR-related disorder is really important. Certain CFTR variants can sometimes be associated with health problems even when someone doesn't have classic cystic fibrosis. If you're trying to understand what your specific variant means, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has a useful overview of cff.org/intro-cf/cf-genetics-basics and the it can provide information about specific CFTR variants. It may be worth discussing the results with a CF specialist or genetic counselor as well, since the genetic result needs to be considered alongside the person's symptoms and medical history.
